How to Search Cases by Name
Utah Courts Xchange is the statewide repository. The public can search it for District and Justice Court case information. Clerks enter the data through CORIS, the Courts Information System. For an Iron County case lookup, pick District, Justice, or both. Then narrow the scope to Iron County or one named court. Type the name the way it likely appeared on the original filing.
- Open the Xchange portal and select the public account route that fits the search.
- Choose District, Justice, or both from the likely case type.
- Enter a surname or company name, add the first name when known, and use official wildcard guidance for spelling variants.
- Set Iron County, Cedar City District Court, or Iron County Justice Court as the scope.
- Add a case type or date range, review the results, then open the case history for the likely match.
If your Iron County court docket search pulls a very common name, expect the results to stop at the 500-result cap. Companies are searched by name too, so put the firm in the last-name or company field and skip any business suffix the filing probably never used.
Iron County Xchange Search Fields
A precise Iron County docket search starts with the right filters. The official Xchange help page lists them all. Case and citation numbers work best. They point to one court record and skip the guesswork.
Pick a jurisdiction and set the scope. Then narrow by date, name, and case type before you run the query. On a common name, those choices turn a flood of results into a short, workable list. The court's blank search screen lays out every one of these controls. It does so without exposing anyone's case.

Choosing the court and scope first keeps a common name from pulling up half the state.
| Field | Use in Iron County | Format note |
|---|---|---|
| Jurisdiction | District, Justice, or both | Match the court type on the notice |
| Case number | Known court case | Enter the full identifier |
| Name or company | Party search | Use the name as filed and wildcard help |
| Case type | Civil, criminal, probate, or judgment | Use the current official code table |
| Search scope | Iron County or a court | Avoid needless statewide results |
| Citation | Justice traffic matter | Use the citation number first |
How to Search by Case Number
A full case number is the strongest search key for an Iron County docket. The Xchange help warns that identifiers are not necessarily unique across all courts. Keep the jurisdiction and the Iron County scope selected. The first two digits usually mark the filing year, and a case-type code and a sequence follow. A shape like YY-CODE-SEQUENCE helps you read the identifier. But the exact value on the court notice controls.
If the search fails, recheck every character and the court type. An Iron County Justice Court number will not return a District result. Both courts sit in Cedar City. When a Justice Court case is appealed, the District Court assigns its own case number. Following that matter may mean reading both histories.
Iron County Case Type Codes
Xchange lets you filter by official case types. These cover civil, tort, judgment, probate, domestic, and criminal matters. Iron County examples include DC for debt collection, CN for contracts, and ES for estate or personal-representative cases. Codes can change over time. Check the current table instead of guessing from initials. The official Xchange code table gives the active filter vocabulary.

The table helps you separate a narrow category from a broad civil or criminal name search.
- Jurisdiction
- The court level, such as District or Justice.
- Search scope
- The geographic or court limit placed on the query.
- Case type
- The official category code assigned to the matter.
- Case history
- The chronological list of public events and indexed facts.
What a Case Search Shows
A result row in an Iron County case search only flags a possible match. Open the history for real detail. The public view may list parties and their roles, lawyers, filing and disposition dates, proceedings, charges, pleas, judgments, accounting entries, and document actions. Each item appears wherever it is public. It is not a police report. It is not a complete exhibit set or an automatic copy of every filed paper.
| Case number | The court's identifier and the key for a later request. |
|---|---|
| Court and county | The jurisdiction and location that own the case history. |
| Case type | The indexed criminal, civil, domestic, probate, judgment, or Justice category. |
| Filed and status dates | Dates entered for filing, disposition, judgment, or related events. |
| Parties and counsel | Public names and role codes, subject to classification and redaction. |
| Proceedings and documents | Chronological entries and separate links for available document images. |
A charge is not a conviction, and a hearing listing does not prove it happened. Read the latest order and the full sequence before concluding anything.
Iron County Case History Depth
Xchange keeps case history separate from document purchases. The official help sample walks through a chronological history with proceedings plus charge or disposition information. That history tells you which order or motion matters. Check it before you pay for an image or ask the clerk for a copy. The official sample history shows exactly how that split works.

The example is an event trail, not a complete case file. Is a paper missing from the portal? The next step is a focused Iron County court record request. Document images from the public District Court may be available to purchase. That covers filings since July 1, 2010. Older files and anything outside online coverage may need clerk service.
County vs Statewide Case Search
Xchange serves as both the statewide and the local public search layer. Iron County runs no separate all-purpose adult case database that replaces it. What changes is the scope setting. A statewide query sweeps participating Utah District and Justice records. An Iron County or named-court query cuts the noise.
| Search choice | Coverage | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Statewide Xchange | Public Utah District and Justice information | A case may be filed outside Iron County |
| Iron County scope | District and Justice results tied to the county | A known local matter |
| Named court scope | Cedar City District or Iron County Justice Court | The court is printed on the notice |
| Calendar | Future settings, not full history | Confirming a hearing date |
Federal cases sit outside Xchange. Those live in PACER and the District of Utah system. Juvenile matters never become ordinary public Xchange records just because they arose in Iron County.
Iron County Guest Access
Xchange offers guest, one-time, and monthly account options. Search and document fees apply, and the posted prices have not always agreed with each other: the subscription page has shown a different per-search price than the guest registration screen. Confirm the current screen before adding funds. The guest entry page is the public starting point.

The entry point keeps public searching separate from authenticated filing tools. A guest session can expire after inactivity, and unused session credits may be lost. The login screen includes account recovery and CAPTCHA controls.

Logging in does not turn Xchange into eFiling or MyCase. It stays the public search and purchase system.
MyCase Is Not Public Search
Utah Courts MyCase is not a public search tool. It is a sign-in service. It serves people who are parties to a case or filing on their own behalf. Through it, an eligible user can view filed papers, track service, and submit filings in that one case. Utah Courts eFiling plays a similar role for attorneys and other authorized filers. Neither tool fits a neighbor. A neighbor simply wants to read a public Iron County court docket.
Keep the jobs separate. Xchange is where anyone can inspect public indexed case information. MyCase and eFiling exist for authorized participation and filing. Checking an upcoming setting is the calendar's job. And when a specific public record is not displayed online, ask the clerk for it.
Restricted Cases and Access Rules
Utah sorts its court records into four classes: public, private, protected, and sealed. Rules 4-202.02 and 4-202.03 set out that scheme. That means a Iron County court docket can hold gaps. Juvenile cases, adoptions, expunged files, sealed matters, and many domestic or protective cases may be missing or limited. Someone authorized who wants a nonpublic item has to state the legal basis for access. The court's request process handles that.
A blank search is not proof of no case. Check the court, scope, spelling, filing name, old location, and case type. A record may also be restricted, sealed, expunged, juvenile, or outside Utah.
Parowan City Justice Court handed its services to Iron County Justice Court on July 1, 2025. So an older Iron County docket entry may still carry a Parowan label, though current Justice matters route to the county court. For routing questions call 435-865-5335; for District matters call 435-867-3250.
